In this 5 days workshop we will cover everything about hyperrealism and the portrait. Working with charcoal on special paper and working from a supplied photograph, Dirk shows you how to create the first basic layers through to the final detailing and texturing. You are shown how to render and match tone and texture through layering and blending, and he reveils how to create depth, atmosphere and life within your artworks. Dirk demonstrates every single step to a hyperealistic portrait drawing for you to follow, and all your questions will be answered.

In the Studio

We maintain a relaxed and fun atmosphere. We often get quite silly in and outside the workshop, so be prepared to having a blast whilst learning a ton.
In the 5 days we all draw the same image and you draw along with me. Dirk will demonstrate every step and help you with your drawing.
Dirk always appreciate if you bring some of your drawings with you (or have them ready on your phone/tablet) and will give comments and pointers on your art.
After registration, you can join our WhatsApp group to discuss anything prior to the workshop and to stay in touch afterwards.

Our new workshop location is now in Lübbecke (Nettelstedt). Lübbecke is situated just north of the Wiehen Hills. Local accommodation is available.

  • Weekly Schedule: 5 days from Saturday to Wednesday 8 hours per day 9:30am to 5:30pm (lunch break at 12pm).

Dirk Dzimirsky

Many artists have been influenced by the award-winning artist Dirk Dzimirsky, who was among the pioneers of the hyperrealistic drawing trend that was resurrected fifteen years ago. He has almost 20 years of experience as a working artist, art instructor, and book author. He has conducted drawing classes in Canada, the USA, and Europe. Both public and private collections own his works, which have been shown in exhibitions all around the world. Corporate clients include LG Electronics, Waterman - Paris, A&E Network Television, RTL Television and National Geographic amongst others. Dirk stays one of the most influential drawing artist today.

Workshop Information

The workshop takes place in Nettelstedt Lübbecke, Germany, and runs from Saturday to Wednesday.
The maximum number of participants ranges from 10 to 12, depending on the course. To allow riskfree booking, especially for international participants, there is no minimum number of students per workshop. Attendants will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis.
Courses will be held in English and German language.
Cancellations & Refund Policy
Cancellations by the participant made in writing 4 weeks (28 days) prior to the start of the event are subject to a € 50,00 cancellation fee. No tuition refunds will be given for any cancellation requests received after the cancellation deadline. Therefore it is recommended that you get a course cancellation insurance that pays the workshop costs in case you can not attend unexpectedly. If you can not find such an insurance in your country you could try a german company like HanseMerkur or Erv Reisevericherung.
A full tuition refund will be issued if the event is cancelled. Please feel free to write an email should you have any question.

The workshop charge covers a material package worth 60 Euros, which is included in the price and will be handed out to you at the workshop.

Please bring your own sharpener suitable for charcoal pencils. We recommend Mitsubishi KH-20

FAQ

  • Do you supply the materials used for the courses?

    No. We issue a full list of materials needed. These are the basic tools required to complete your artwork in the course and you will be required to bring these yourself. We do supply the paper/surface you will be working on. If there is a material that you can not find, just let us know and we will have it available at the workshop.

  • Do you supply accommodation?

    No but Please visit the travel page for some recommendations.

  • I am not from Europe. Do I need some kind of visa to join the course?

    The normal visa requirements for travel according to your country of citizenship applies for your visit. Please make sure you have a visa (if needed) before registering for a workshop. We do not accept registrations without it as that caused to a lot of problems in the past.

  • What if I do not like the artwork I create?

    We are here to teach you methods you can use for every drawing you create after the course has ended. If you find that you are not happy with you’re work while here then there will be many opportunities during the course for you to get advice and to make alterations to your picture thereby not only, hopefully, altering your feelings about the piece you are making here but also giving you the significant skills required to make such alterations to your pieces in the future.

  • Is food and drink supplied or is there somewhere to purchase food near by?

    We do not supply food and drink. We advise that you bring your own food and drink to the course. A kettle is available to boil water. There is a delivery service nearby where we order our lunch typically.

  • Do we get a certificate on completing the course?

    Yes, each attendant gets a certificate after the workshop.

  • What language is the course taught in?

    The course is taught in both German and English.

  • Can I bring my own photographs to work from?

    We all work from the same photo that will be provided. Every single step will be demonstrated and all the techniques explained in depth. We usually wait for every student to finish the steps before teaching and demonstrating the next one.
