A Different Approach to Learning Drawing

While many academies treat drawing fundamentals as preparation for painting or casual sketching, DRAMA focuses on a clear objective: helping you draw from photos with a sculptural approach to hyperrealism.

Every training program is designed to develop, step by step, the techniques, understanding, and control required for high-level drawing — not just basic practice.

Most artists who draw from photos try to achieve realism by copying details from the very beginning. They attempt to draw everything at once — and often become slaves to the photo.

The result is usually frustration: flat drawings, inconsistent realism, and detail that do not look realistic, instead instead of focusing on structure, form, and depth.

The Dzimirsky Drawing Method teaches a different way.

You learn how to use a photo as a starting point, not as something to copy blindly. Through a clear step-by-step system, you build the drawing from the inside out: first structure, values, and sculptural form — then details, textures, and final refinement.

The goal is not to create a photocopy.

The goal is to transform the reference into an artwork that stands on its own — with depth, atmosphere, emotion, and presence.

Over time, this process changes more than your drawings. It changes the way you see, think, and work as an artist.

Inside DRAMA, you follow structured learning paths for our 2 main drawing mediums: graphite and/or charcoal, with a strong focus on realistic portrait drawing.

Each path is divided into 4 progressive levels, guiding you through the essential stages of your development — from fundamental technique to advanced portrait work.

You move through these levels, completing assignments and submitting your work before advancing. This ensures that each stage is understood and practiced before more advanced techniques are unlocked.

By completing Level 4, you have developed the skills and understanding needed to create advanced hyperrealistic portraits with the Sculptural Approach.

We stay closely connected with current and past students and follow their progress over time, and celebrate their milestones and wins with them!
