About DRAMA

What is DRAMA?

DRAMA (Dzimirsky Realism Art Master Atelier) is the online atelier of internationally renowned hyperrealist artist Dirk Dzimirsky.

Built around the Dzimirsky Drawing Method, the Atelier offers a structured path from foundational drawing skills to advanced artistic development in graphite and charcoal. Through progressive study classes, practical assignments, individual feedback, live sessions, and guided drawing projects, students develop both their technical abilities and their own artistic direction.

The goal is not simply to master realistic drawing techniques, but to develop the skills, understanding, and artistic judgment needed to create compelling works of art.

Who is DRAMA for?

DRAMA is designed for aspiring and experienced artists who want to develop their skills in realistic and hyperrealistic drawing, particularly in graphite and charcoal.

Beginners learn the fundamentals step by step, while experienced artists can refine their techniques, deepen their artistic understanding, and develop their own creative work. The Atelier is best suited to those who are committed to regular practice, structured study, and learning through personal feedback.

We can assess your current drawings and recommend the most suitable starting point for your studies.

What is the Dzimirsky Drawing Method?

The Dzimirsky Drawing Method is a structured approach to realistic and hyperrealistic drawing developed by artist Dirk Dzimirsky through more than 20 years of artistic practice and teaching.

Rather than focusing on details from the beginning, the method teaches you to understand form, light, tonal values, and spatial relationships. Drawings are developed progressively, from their underlying structure to increasingly refined details.

At DRAMA, these principles are taught step by step through practical exercises, assignments, and guided drawing projects.

Will I be studying directly with Dirk Dzimirsky?

Yes. DRAMA is my online Atelier, built around my own artistic approach and more than two decades of teaching experience.

You learn through my lessons, drawing demonstrations, and the Dzimirsky Drawing Method. I remain involved in the Atelier's teaching and artistic direction, while my teaching team and I support students through individual feedback, live sessions, and guided study.

This allows you to learn from my techniques and artistic judgment while receiving regular guidance throughout your development.

Is DRAMA suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The DRAMA curriculum is designed to teach realistic drawing from the foundations through advanced hyperrealistic techniques. No previous drawing experience is required.

However, the Atelier is intended for serious study. Beginners should be prepared to practice regularly, complete assignments, and develop their skills progressively.

The Curriculum

How is the curriculum structured?

The DRAMA Atelier offers structured learning paths for graphite and charcoal drawing, each divided into four progressive levels, from essential drawing foundations to advanced hyperrealistic techniques.

Each level includes study classes, practical exercises, and assignments designed to build skills progressively. Students receive individual feedback and advance as they demonstrate their understanding and abilities.

Experienced artists can begin at a more advanced level based on an assessment of their current work. After completing the four levels, students can continue developing their own artwork through guided artistic projects.

Do I have to complete the lessons in order?

The curriculum is designed as a progressive learning experience. Each lesson, exercise, and assignment builds upon previously developed skills, so we recommend following the intended sequence.

Progression to the next level requires completing the necessary assignments and demonstrating an understanding of the techniques taught.

However, experienced artists do not necessarily have to start at the beginning. We assess your existing drawing skills and recommend the most appropriate starting point.

How long does it take to complete the curriculum?

The DRAMA curriculum is designed for long-term artistic development. Students starting with the foundations should plan for approximately one to two years of regular study.

Your individual progress depends on your previous experience, available practice time, and how well you master each stage. Students advance based on demonstrated skills rather than a fixed schedule.

After completing the four levels, you can continue your artistic development through guided personal drawing projects.

Will I learn to create my own artwork or only draw from photographs?

The curriculum begins with structured drawing exercises and photographic references to develop essential skills in observation, form, tonal values, and realistic representation.

As you progress, you learn to interpret photographic references, make artistic decisions, and develop your own drawings rather than simply reproducing photographs.

At advanced levels, you can work on personal drawing projects with guidance and feedback from our instructors.

Our goal is to help you become an independent artist capable of creating original, compelling works of realistic or hyperrealistic art.

Do I need to work on large drawings?

No. Although some of my finished artworks are quite large, I also work on smaller drawings, particularly when teaching and demonstrating techniques.

Smaller formats are often more practical for developing specific techniques. Larger formats are entirely optional and can be explored in your personal drawing projects if you prefer working on a bigger scale.

What matters is not the size of your drawing, but the quality of your observation, technical control, and artistic understanding.

How is my individual study roadmap created?

When you join DRAMA, we assess your previous drawing experience, current abilities, and artistic goals.

Based on this assessment, we create an individual study plan that identifies your starting level, the skills you should focus on, and your recommended learning path through the Atelier.

Your study plan provides direction for your artistic development while allowing adjustments as your skills and interests evolve.

What will I learn to draw at DRAMA?

The Atelier focuses on realistic and hyperrealistic drawing in graphite and charcoal, with particular emphasis on portrait drawing. But we also include other subjects such as figuge, animals, birds, still lifes.

You begin by developing essential skills such as shading, tonal control, understanding light and form, and interpreting photographic references. As you progress, you study increasingly complex subjects, including facial features, hands, textures, and complete portraits.

The advanced curriculum prepares you to develop your own realistic drawings, combining technical precision with individual artistic expression.

Studying at DRAMA

Is the Atelier self-paced?

Yes. The core curriculum is self-paced, allowing you to study lessons, practice techniques, and complete assignments according to your own schedule.

However, you don't study entirely on your own. Your progress is supported by individual feedback, assignment reviews, and guidance from our instructors.

Alongside the curriculum, DRAMA offers scheduled live Study Classes, drawing critiques, and other Atelier events throughout the year.

How much time should I expect to practice?

DRAMA does not require a fixed number of practice hours, but the Atelier is designed for artists who are committed to regular, focused study.

We recommend setting aside time for drawing several days each week. This includes practicing techniques, repeating exercises, completing assignments, and applying the feedback you receive.

Your progress depends on your previous experience, the time you invest, and how well you develop each skill. The goal is not to complete lessons quickly, but to build the understanding and technical control needed for advanced realistic drawing.

Can I study on a tablet or mobile device?

Yes. Lessons can be viewed on computers, tablets and smartphones. For detailed demonstrations and reference comparisons, however, a larger screen provides the best learning experience.

Feedback & Support

Will I receive feedback on my drawings?

Yes. You submit your completed assignments for review and receive individual feedback from our instructors.

Your feedback identifies what you have achieved, where improvements are needed, and what you should focus on next. If necessary, you can revise and resubmit your work.

You also receive feedback on your personal drawing projects, either in writing or during our live feedback sessions. This allows you to receive guidance on your own artistic work beyond the structured curriculum.

The goal is to help you develop your technical skills, artistic judgment, and confidence as an independent artist.

What are Study Classes?

Study Classes are live, instructor-led sessions that support your progress through the DRAMA curriculum.

Each session focuses on the techniques and assignments taught at different levels and may include drawing demonstrations, assignment reviews, discussions of common challenges, and opportunities to ask questions.

Study Classes allow you to learn alongside other students working on similar subjects, benefit from their questions and feedback, and deepen your understanding of the techniques you are studying.

What if I can't attend a live Study Class?

All live Study Classes are recorded and made available inside the Atelier. You can watch the recordings whenever it suits your schedule and revisit demonstrations, assignment reviews, and discussions as often as needed.

Can I ask questions during my studies?

Yes. You can ask questions during live Study Classes, in the Atelier community, or directly to our instructors when you need individual guidance. Whether you have questions about drawing techniques, assignments, materials, or your personal drawing projects, our team is here to support your artistic development.

Materials

Do I need expensive drawing materials?

No. The Foundation Classes begin with a relatively small selection of drawing materials. More specialized tools are introduced only when they become relevant later in the curriculum.

Can I study both Graphite and Charcoal?

Yes. DRAMA offers dedicated Graphite and Charcoal learning paths. Both follow the same Dzimirsky Drawing Method and overall curriculum structure while teaching the techniques specific to each medium.

If you're unsure where to begin, Graphite is generally the easiest starting point because the required materials are widely available.
