Learning Paths
Two Mediums. One Method.
DRAMA offers two learning paths: Graphite and Charcoal.
Both follow the same structured curriculum and are built around the Dzimirsky Drawing Method. The lessons, assignments and learning objectives are identical. The only difference is the drawing medium.
Whether you choose graphite or charcoal, you'll develop the same artistic understanding and progress through the same four curriculum levels.
Graphite
Graphite is the most familiar drawing medium and an excellent place to begin.
It offers precise control, is widely available, and allows students to develop strong technical foundations before progressing to more advanced topics.
For students who are unsure which medium to choose, graphite is generally the recommended starting point.
Charcoal
Charcoal offers a rich tonal range and expressive mark-making that make it particularly well suited to dramatic realism.
The curriculum follows the same learning path as Graphite but introduces techniques and materials specific to charcoal drawing.
Some of the materials used in the academy are more specialized and may require a little more time to source.
Can I Study Both?
Yes.
Many students eventually choose to explore both learning paths.
Because the underlying principles of the Dzimirsky Drawing Method remain the same, transitioning between Graphite and Charcoal becomes much easier once you've developed a solid understanding of the fundamentals.
Which Should I Choose?
If you're new to the academy, don't feel you need to decide immediately.
Spend a little time exploring both paths. As you become familiar with the lessons and materials, you'll naturally discover which medium appeals to you most.
If you're still unsure, I recommend beginning with Graphite. The materials are easier to obtain, allowing you to begin your studies right away.
