In this 5 days workshop we will cover everything about hyperrealism and the portrait. Working with graphite on paper and working from a supplied photograph, I will show you how to create the first basic layers through to the final detailing and texturing. You are shown how to render and match tone and texture through layering and blending, and I reveil how to create depth, atmosphere and life within your artworks. I will demonstrate every single step to a hyperealistic portrait drawing for you to follow, and all your questions will be answered.

In the Studio

We maintain a relaxed and fun atmosphere. We often get quite silly in and outside the workshop, so be prepared to having a blast whilst learning a ton.
In the 5 days we all draw the same image and you draw along with me. I will demonstrate every step and help you with your drawing.
I always appreciate if you bring some of your drawings with you (or have them ready on your phone/tablet) and will give comments and pointers on your art.

General Information

Atelier Address:
Schamerloh 84 - 31606 Warmsen, Germany.
Located in the idyllic, rural surroundings of Warmsen, Lower Saxony in Germany, the atelier offers the feel of a relaxing art retreat amidst picturesque countryside. Teaching will take place within a large studio classrooms. More cities accessible via nearby Minden train station (about 20 minutes by car). Local accommodation is available.

  • Maximum Class Size: 12 students

  • Weekly Schedule: From Saturday to Wednesday (at longer workshops it is possible to work on the free days as well) 8 hours per day 9am to 5pm (lunch break at 12pm).

  • Languages: German and English.

  • Parking: In Front of School / Free.

Workshop Information

The workshop takes place at my Atelier in Warmsen, Germany, and runs from Saturday to Wednesday.
After registration you will receive a confirmation email* with further infos, material list and payment details. Payment options are bank transfer, Paypal and Wise. Your seat will not be confirmed until receiving the payment.
The maximum number of participants ranges from 10 to 16, depending on the course. To allow riskfree booking, especially for international participants, there is no minimum number of students per workshop. Attendants will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis.
Courses will be held in English and German language.
Cancellations & Refund Policy
Cancellations by the participant made in writing 4 weeks (28 days) prior to the start of the event are subject to a € 50,00 cancellation fee. No tuition refunds will be given for any cancellation requests received after the cancellation deadline. Therefore it is recommended that you get a course cancellation insurance that pays the workshop costs in case you can not attend unexpectedly. If you can not find such an insurance in your country you could try a german company like HanseMerkur or Erv Reisevericherung. A full tuition refund will be issued if the event is cancelled. Please feel free to write an email should you have any question.
*IMPORTANT: Unfortunately it happens quite often that my emails land into SPAM folders. If you did not receive an email within a few days after your registration please contact me (through Facebook or Instagram profile is also possible).

Material List

Please bring the following materials. Contact me if you need help.

  • Faber-Castell pencils 9000 series (5H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 5B, 8B) or similar brand
  • Staedtler Mars Lumograph BLACK 2B to 8B (make sure you do not buy the regular blue ones!!!)
  • Tombow Mono Zero Eraser Pencil, round
  • Kneadable Eraser
  • Lyra Splender (optional)
  • Blending stumps, small to medium sizes
  • Soft Fan brush
  • Soft tissues
  • Stiff synthetic brushes, small to large size (not in the photo)
  • Sharpening machine
  • Paper will be handed out for the workshop. If you want to find paper yourself look for one that has some tooth and some texture. Smooth surfaces are not usable (note some papers are called smooth but they are textured).

Travel & Accommodation

We advice that everyone stays at the hotel "Ferienhof Mayer" (see below). Besides being together with like-minded people in and outside of the workshop is great fun, we can only asure transportation to and from my studio to this hotel. If you have your own transportation, you can choose a different stay, should you want to.

Price per night with breakfast c. 45 Euro (single room).
Please book a room soon after your registration. Payment for the room is only due upon arrival at the hotel, so no risk. Ask for pickup from the train station to the hotel. Please let us know should you plan to book a different place.
Since the Atelier is a little outside (about 10 minutes by car from the hotel), we will organize transportation from and to the hotel. Please let us know should you plan to come by car.

General Travel Information

Nearest airport is Hannover. But Duesseldorf International is usually cheaper and also not far. From there it's adviced to take a train to Minden(Westf). From there you can get to the hotel by bus or taxi. If you let us know in time your arrivel time in Minden we will try to organize a pick up to the hotel.

Dirk Dzimirsky

Award-winning artist Dirk Dzimirsky was one of the drawing artists that established hyperrealistic drawings as a rediscovered art movement 15 years ago, and he has inspired many artists ever since. He has been a professional artist, art teacher and book author for over 20 years. He has given drawing workshops in Europe, USA and Canada. His works have been exhibited worldwide and are held in public and private collections. Corporate clients include LG Electronics, Waterman - Paris, A&E Network Television, RTL Television and National Geographic amongst others. Dirk stays one of the most influential drawing artist.

FAQ

  • Do you supply the materials used for the courses?

    No. We issue a full list of materials needed. These are the basic tools required to complete your artwork in the course and you will be required to bring these yourself. We do supply the paper/surface you will be working on. If there is a material that you can not find, just let us know and we will have it available at the workshop.

  • Do you supply accommodation?

    No but Please visit the travel page for some recommendations.

  • I am not from Europe. Do I need some kind of visa to join the course?

    The normal visa requirements for travel according to your country of citizenship applies for your visit. Please make sure you have a visa (if needed) before registering for a workshop. We do not accept registrations without it as that caused to a lot of problems in the past.

  • What are the entry regulation in regards to Covid-19?

  • What if I do not like the artwork I create?

    We are here to teach you methods you can use for every drawing you create after the course has ended. If you find that you are not happy with you’re work while here then there will be many opportunities during the course for you to get advice and to make alterations to your picture thereby not only, hopefully, altering your feelings about the piece you are making here but also giving you the significant skills required to make such alterations to your pieces in the future.

  • Is food and drink supplied or is there somewhere to purchase food near by?

    We do not supply food and drink. We advise that you bring your own food and drink to the course. A kettle is available to boil water. There is a delivery service nearby where we order our lunch typically.

  • Do we get a certificate on completing the course?

    Yes, each attendant gets a certificate after the workshop.

  • What language is the course taught in?

    The course is taught in both German and English.

  • Can I bring my own photographs to work from?

    We all work from the same photo that will be provided. Every single step will be demonstrated and all the techniques explained in depth. We usually wait for every student to finish the steps before teaching and demonstrating the next one.
