All the steps in this class guide you through your project.

The process begins when you send us your reference photo. We review your image and provide feedback, along with edited versions of the photo if necessary. These adjustments help ensure that the reference works well for drawing and that the important forms and values are clearly readable.

Next, you create a first study of the image. This study allows you to explore the structure, proportions, and value relationships before committing to the final drawing. Once you submit your study, we review it carefully and provide feedback. When the study meets the necessary requirements, you receive the green light to continue.

From there, you move through the three stages of the drawing process:

• Establishing the base tones and sculpting the main forms
• Refining forms while gradually adding details and texture
• Final refinement, strengthening contrasts, and bringing the drawing to life

At each stage, you can submit your progress and receive targeted feedback to help you move forward with confidence. This structured approach ensures that you stay focused on the right priorities at the right time, while continuously improving your technical skills.

Dzimirsky Drawing Method: Choosing the Right Photo: The Foundation of a Great Drawing

A great photo is the first step—arguably the most crucial step—in creating a successful drawing.

Yet this stage is often underestimated, especially by beginners. Many treat the reference photo as a minor detail, when in reality it lays the groundwork for everything that follows.

There’s also a common misconception:
A great photo automatically leads to a great drawing. That’s simply not true.

A photo that works beautifully on its own does not necessarily meet the requirements of a successful drawing. For drawing, we need:

* Clear and readable light and shadow

* No omitted information (we decide ourselves what to include)

* No photographic effects

* Minimal distortion or digital over-editing

So that we can use the photo as a tool— not a limitation.

Dzimirsky Drawing Method: Studies

Before starting your final drawing, we highly recommend creating one or more studies of challenging areas.

This step is a real game changer.

A full drawing can take weeks, depending on your level and available time. A study, however, might take one or two days - sometimes even just an hour. A study is not meant to be a finished artwork.
Its purpose is to help you understand difficult areas, textures, or forms, and to become familiar with parts that you do not yet have much experience with before committing them to your final piece.

Trying to solve technical challenges in the middle of a full-scale drawing - after investing weeks of effort - can be stressful and even a motivation killer! Studies remove that pressure!

Studies Checklist

• Draw your study on the same type of paper and in the same size as your intended final drawing.
• You do not need to complete the entire image - focus only on the areas you need to explore or understand better.
• You may draw each section in the study first and then execute it in the final piece, repeating this process step by step.
• If at any point during the drawing process you need to test something, return to your study and experiment there first.
• Do not treat the study as a polished artwork. It is your playground - a space to experiment freely, make bold attempts, and welcome mistakes, so they don’t happen in your final drawing.

Dzimirsky Drawing Method: Sculpting the Forms – First Pass

Now you begin the actual drawing using Dirk’s sculptural approach.

During the first pass, your primary focus is to establish the base tones of the image. A posterized version of your reference photo can be very helpful at this stage, as it simplifies the value structure and allows you to clearly identify the main tonal groups.

Once the base tones are in place, begin to sculpt the major forms using smooth gradients. Think of this stage less as drawing and more as shaping the forms through light and shadow.

At this point, it is essential to ignore all details and textures. Do not attempt to work on form and detail simultaneously. Mixing these stages often leads to a patchy, muddy result, where neither the forms nor the details are clearly defined.

Instead, imagine looking at your reference image from a distance. From far away, you would only perceive the large shapes created by light and shadow, while the smaller details would disappear. This is exactly the level of information you should focus on during this stage.

Only after the major forms are clearly established should you begin working on details and textures.

Approach this stage in passes as well. In the first detail pass, concentrate on the most prominent and obvious details, even though you are drawing them with precision. Avoid the temptation to render every small texture immediately. The finer, subtler details will be addressed in later passes.

Working in stages like this keeps the process manageable and ensures that both your forms and details remain clean, controlled, and clearly defined.

Dzimirsky Drawing Method: Second Pass – Refining Detail and Texture

In the second pass, you begin to gradually add more details and texture to the drawing.

A helpful way to think about this stage is to imagine a projector that is slightly out of focus. At first, the image appears soft and blurry. By slowly adjusting the focus of the lens, the image becomes sharper and more defined. In your drawing process, adding details and refining edges is similar to turning that focus ring—each pass brings more clarity to the image.

Rather than concentrating on a single area and trying to finish it completely, continue working in passes across the entire drawing. After refining one area, move on to the next, gradually bringing the whole image forward together. This approach allows the drawing to develop as a unified whole, rather than as a collection of isolated, overly rendered sections.

When the entire drawing progresses together, it becomes much easier to evaluate and sculpt the forms. At this stage, the drawing will begin to guide your decisions. It will start to reveal what it still needs—whether that means stronger edges, additional texture, or subtle adjustments to values—and it will also indicate when the piece is approaching completion.

Dzimirsky Drawing Method: Final Stage – Bringing the Drawing to Life

In the final stage, your goal is to bring the drawing fully to life. This is the most satisfying part of the whole drawing.

Here, you begin refining the work with careful attention to detail, contrast, and tonal balance. Strengthen key contrasts where needed, adjust tonal relationships, and refine subtle transitions between light and shadow. Small adjustments at this stage can significantly enhance the clarity, depth, and presence of the portrait.

Focus on sharpening important edges, refining textures, and emphasizing the areas that carry the most visual impact. Each decision should support the overall harmony of the drawing until the portrait feels clear, powerful, and alive.
